If your business runs on Odoo V12, 13, 14, 15, 16, or 17, and you have not yet upgraded, you are now staring down a 25% price increase on your annual Enterprise subscription. This is not speculation. In 2025, Odoo’s founder publicly announced a new surcharge for businesses operating on legacy versions, and invoices began arriving in April 2026 with the surcharge added for the users who didn’t upgrade.

At Master Software Solutions, a certified Odoo implementation partner with three certified Odoo developers, we’ve been fielding questions from businesses across industries who are trying to understand exactly what this means for them.

This article breaks it all down clearly and honestly, with the specific details you need to make a smart decision.

Businesses that complete their upgrade before April 2026 will not be charged the surcharge for that annual cycle. Miss the deadline, and 25% fees apply.

What Odoo Actually Announced

Odoo’s founder announced a change to the Enterprise contract: versions outside the three most recently released Odoo versions will now attract an additional 25% annual fee. The three covered versions (as of 2025) are Odoo 17, 18, and 19. Everything from Odoo 16 downward is now classified as a “Legacy Version.”

The important nuance is that older versions do still receive official support, but that support now comes at a premium. Odoo is not cutting off legacy users; it is simply making it financially costly to remain on them. The message is clear: upgrade or pay more, every single year.

Which versions are affected?

Odoo 16 and earlier versions, including V12, V13, V14, and V15, are now classified as legacy versions and are subject to a 25% surcharge. If you are on Odoo 17, 18, or 19, you are on a converted version and pay no extra fee. If you are on V12, V13, V14, V15, or V16, the surcharge applies to your next renewal after July 4, 2025.

How the Surcharge Works

Understanding this will help you determine your exposure and plan accordingly.

Contracts renewed before July 4, 2025

If you renewed before the July 4, 2025, cut-off date, you are protected until your current contract expires, even if you remain on an old version for the entire term. No extra charge applies during that period.

Contracts Renewal after July 4, 2025

Any renewal after July 4, 2025, on a legacy version is subject to the surcharge. Odoo will begin invoicing the additional 25% in April 2026. For multi-year contracts, the surcharge is calculated as the annualized price (total contract value divided by the number of years).

The April 2026 Trigger

Odoo checks versions in April 2026. If you are still on a legacy version at that point, the surcharge applies for that annual billing cycle. Upgrade before April 2026, and you avoid the charge entirely for that year.

ravi garg, master software solutions, impact of 25% odoo surcharge, odoo 5 year contract, odoo v 16 updated to v19 before april 2026, odoo 16 update completed in july 2026, odoo 15 contract active 2029, odoo 16 5 year contract no upgrade

The Financial Reality: Can You Really Ignore This

Some businesses will consider simply absorbing the 25% fees and staying put. Whether that is a smart move depends entirely on your upgrade cost and your annual subscription size. The math is straightforward:
Annual Surcharge = 25% X Your Annual Enterprise Subscription
Break-even Point = Upgrade Cost / Annual Surcharge = Years to Break Even

Example: $5000/yr Subscription
Surcharge = 25% of 5000 = $1250

For most businesses, especially those with modest customizations, the upgrade cost will be recovered within two to three years. Delaying does not save money; it compounds cost. Every year you wait, you pay 25% more on top of any future price increases (and Odoo has already raised subscription prices in the US and Canada by up to 30% in 2026, with a new 7% annual indexation clause on all new contracts).

There are legitimate reasons to delay:

  1. If you are mid-project
  2. Planning a larger system redesign
  3. Have exceptionally complex integrations that require careful migration planning

In these cases, a phased approach with a clear upgrade roadmap is the smartest path, not definite deferral.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. Can I stay on a legacy version indefinitely and still get support?

A1. Odoo has not announced a hard deadline for discontinuing support for legacy versions. You can remain on an older version and receive official support by paying the 25% surcharge. However, this applies primarily to on-premises deployments. If you are on Odoo.sh (cloud hosting), note that Odoo 14 will be removed from the platform on October 31, 2026, and older versions are subject to hosting lifecycle limits.

Q2. Will legacy versions receive localization and compliance updates?

A2. This is not clearly defined. Odoo has indicated it will decide on a case-by-case basis. There are precedents for backports; for example, Odoo has already committed to backporting Peppol support to V16. However, there is no guarantee that all future compliance requirements will be addressed in legacy versions. Businesses in heavily regulated industries should factor this risk into their upgrade decision.

Q3. What if I have heavy customizations?

A3. Heavily customized instances are the most complex upgrades, sometimes closer to a re-implementation combined with data migration. This is precisely why early planning matters. The longer you wait, the wider the version gap, and the more complex and expensive the migration becomes. An experienced partner can assess your customizations early and structure a phased upgrade to minimize disruption and cost.

Q4. Are more price increases coming?

A4. Odoo has already increased subscription prices in the US and Canada by up to 30% in 2026, and introduced a 7% per annum indexation clause on all new contracts and renewals. There are unconfirmed reports of increases in other regions. The trend is clear: the cost of staying on Odoo, especially on legacy versions, is rising. Upgrading sooner locks in a more favorable baseline.
